The work that young people do in their fight for the environment, animals and community often surpasses our expectation. For example, under the supervision of their teacher, a Roots & Shoots middle school group in Qingdao, Shandong Province carried out an in-depth investigation and research on the Chinese River Dolphin, including various knowledge, policies and regulations. Even long-time researchers in the field were amazed by the dedication and depth of thinking these students have demonstrated. This group even mobilised and joined forces with a local university Roots & Shoots group to raise awareness among fishermen at the local port on relevant laws and regulations.
The work of these young people is exactly what Dr. Goodall wishes to see: “Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, we will help. Only if we help, we shall be saved.” The outstanding work of this single middle school Roots & Shoots group prompted us to launch our Roots & Shoots River Dolphin Protection Projects. Our aim is to encourage more Roots & Shoots students in Shandong Province as well as the whole nation to get involved in advocacy, awareness raising on relevant laws and regulations to fishermen.
